Is it Safe to Mount a TV Over a Fireplace?

The short answer is yes, Fireplace TV mounting can be done.  But, can it be done safely?  Yes, it can be done safely.  However, if you have another wall that would work also, if you might consider it and if you use the fireplace a lot.  While it is safe and if you already have the jacks installed there, it makes sense as an option.  Keep in mind that tv will need electricity and you might need an electrician to run power to that area.  This will be an added cost.

In some cases, this is the only way to arrange the room.  That is perfectly fine but just be wary of how hot the tv is get

ting.  Some types of fireplaces burn more intensely than others. Remember though, heat rises.  Maybe put a thermometer on the tv for a few days and see what the temperature reads.

GEL fireplaces are the safest bet.

Another option is to use low heat options for your fire such as a gel.  While the older generation TVs would produce quite an amount of heat, the TVs today do not.  They don’t use the electricity that the TVs in the past used.  Temperature-wise the new style LED TVs are only ranked for temperatures up to 104°F.

Many times fireplace TV mounting isn’t the ideal location due to it being so high.  Your tv probably came with a manual that will tell you the optimal viewing angles, temperature and height.  You should look into that also.

You might be surprised that there isn’t enough room above the mantel in some cases. Some mantels can be quite high, leaving little wall space for a tv.  When ceilings are 7/1/2′ – 8′ and the mantel is 50-60 inches that doesn’t leave a lot of room, should you not want the tv to touch the mantel or ceiling.

Do temperature readings to determine if your fireplace tv mounting is safe.

If you have jacks and outlets there, which is very common in apartments and condos.  They intended your tv to be mounted there.  Again, if you want to be safe then sorry, take the temperature and ensure that the area doesn’t go over 400°F.  This will ensure that the area is in fact safe and you can have the fireplace TV mounting that you were looking for without worry.

While wood fires are very romantic they can be messy.  They can have more smoke than other substances and that can affect your tv as well as they burn hotter.  If you have a gas or gel fireplace, you might have a better chance with our tv being above the fireplace when the fireplace is in use.

Natural gas fireplaces are also very popular at the moment.  They do give off a nice flame to watch.  Some people like to gaze at a fire’s flame as a method of relaxing.  This sort of fire is nothing to worry about, as it does not burn that hot.  However, gel fireplaces are the best option for fireplace tv mounting, if you have a choice.  Gel burns far cooler than wood or natural gas.
