How To Mount TV On The Wall Without Studs
Having your TV mounted to the wall instead of sitting on a stand is one of the best ways to make your living room comfier. However, the normal way to do this requires studs. The problem is that many landlords don’t let you drill into the wall.
Today, we’re going to take a look at how to mount a tv on the wall without studs.
This will help improve your viewing experience, and will also give you more space.
How To Mount A TV On The Wall Without Studs | Step-By-Step
To mount a TV without steps, you will need to follow the following steps:
- Attach the brackets
- Nail/Screw the wall plate
- Attach the TV
We’ve explained these steps in detail below. But, first, let’s take a look at what you will need.
What Do You Need?
- Anchors
Anchors are essential if you would like to mount your TV without studs. They prevent the holes from letting the screws fall out of them. In some cases, the screws can even destroy the drywall. Anchors also prevent this and any other type of damage.
- Toggle Anchors/Bolts
Toggle anchors are slightly different from regular screws. The main difference is that they have a butterfly toggle instead. This is located towards the end of them. When you tighten the screw the butterfly anchor opens up and grips the drywall from the inside. Each anchor can support up to 40-65 pounds. It will say on the packet when you purchase them. Can be found in the local hardware store.
- Molly Bolts
Name for a specialized screw fastener that would reliably fasten objects to plaster or gypsum board or hollow walls. The fastener is an anchor, an expandable sleeve that slides into a hole drilled into the wall. A lip wider than the hole prevents it from falling behind the wall and rotating when being compressed.
- Zip Toggle Anchors with Bolts
These anchors can also be used in commercial jobs or high rise building which has metal studs. If there are metal studs all you have to do is make a hole in the metal stud and then put the anchor in that hole so when it opens up it will grab the metal stud. Then you would just screw the wall plate to that anchor with the screw provided. Available at Home Depot.
- Ceiling Mounts
You can also use ceiling mounts if you don’t have any studs on the walls. On the ceiling you will find studs running on either direction and you can mount the bracket to it. This can also be more complicated, and often is harder to implement.
If you do use ceiling mounts, they will require longer screws to reach the joists.
2 Quick Tips Before You Start
Before you start using the tutorial below, we just wanted to give you two quick tips.
Firstly, you should know the weight of your TV and its requirements. Make sure your wall plate and anchors are strong enough to hold that weight.
Secondly, you should also watch out for your walls. If you have an old drywall, you should avoid using strong wall anchors, as they can often damage your wall.
1. Attach The Brackets
Firstly, you need to attach the brackets to the TV. Many TV mounts don’t have the right hardware to connect to most TVs. You can find the right screws in your local hardware store, if not provided in the mounting bracket. Usually the hardware provided works with all the top brands like Samsung, Sony, LG etc.
Make sure you have enough support on the lower screen too, else it can tip down.
2. Nail It/Screw It!
Now you need to nail or screw the wall plate with the anchors mentioned above. Most kits will also have a leveler built into them, so it’s easy to get the wall plate perfectly leveled.
3. Attach The TV
Now, all you have to do is attach the TV to the wall plate. This feels pretty good, so well done for completing it!
